    Default rim & tyre sizes

No doubt I could hunt around the web & find things out but you guys probably already know the answers so:

Would someone be able to tell me the standard tyre sizes & rim widths for:

    - Light 15
    - ID & DS
    - CX
    - SM
    - BX

I would like to eventually know these dimensions for all variants of these models.

    thanks in advance, Peter

    Hi Peter
The traction post 1938 4 cylinder is 400mm across the rim bead seat, and 115mm between the rim bead flanges. Tyre size is 165x 400mm.
I do not have a rim from the Six Cylinder traction to measure up but as they take a 185x400mm tyre I assume that the distance across the rim bead flange inner faces would be 20mm more that the rim for the 4 cylinder car.

The standard CX steel rims are 5.5" rims, the alloy rims are 6" rims, both 14" diameter. That leaves out the TRX rims which are only suitable for TRX tyres or the Avon equivalents.

The DS also had a 180x15 rim. The round hole in the middle of the rim vs the 185 square 'hole' (if such a thing exists!).

Some 400mm cars will likely have 15 inch conversions. Maybe, this pink 1960 ID19

is one such car as it has crossplies fitted.

No... I think David is correct...

On original 400 rims, the centre disc stands proud of a line across the rim face....
In these pics it seems to be inside that line... like a 15" conversion.

SM started with 195 70 15, then went to 205 70 15 and some people fit 215 65 15, which are close fit under the rear wheel spats. Michelin XWX was the tyre. Wheels are 6 inch wide.

The post 1966 D wheels will fit SM (and vice versa) but SM wheels have very large centre hole for the mounting bracket that holds the wheel-trim in place.

205 70 15's on the front of a DS does reduce wheelspin from standing start if you're keen I ran my D Safari on that size for many years.

The old Ford Transit van wheels have the same bolt pattern and PCD as the SM and D, 5x160, so there's s few modern alloys out there to cringe at.

    cheers
