    Default C4 Hdi for daugther

Our eldest daughter's Mi16 died some months ago and I need to get her into something economical that has a manual gearbox. I'm thinking a diesel C4 but don't know much about what to look for - can anybody recommend a model and/or year range and am I being realistic if I only have $5k to spend?

    C4 Hdi for daugther
To borrow a saying, sounds like a fair swap.

Try a 307 if a C4 isn't around - pretty much the same car save for the BSI vagaries. All PSA cars this age should include allowance for a new battery of good quality; if it expires suddenly one morning you can be in more doo-doo than it's worth. You'd get a 307 needing tyres and a few things sorting, from $500 and up.

Can you help me with what "BSI vagaries" means? I'm a bit hopeless with acronyms...and how to spell daughter...

The body computer or BSI - which must function wholly for the car to start and run - has a habit of dropping its bundle on older 307 models if the battery is too old or flat.

C4 of the same vintage may do this too. I just haven't seen it.

Thanks addo, good information to have! I have the plug in laptop thingy for our C5 so hopefully that will help in such situations with a C4 or 307. Does $5k sound reasonable value for a 2006 C4 Hdi with 100k on the odometer? I just started looking so I don't know what to compare it to.

100k for a 9 y.o. isn't bad. Do the usual checks, eg timing belt. The nastiest problem I know of on the 1.6 diesel is loss of the turbocharger, usually from a lubrication problem. There's a lot online, including a recent incident here in AF. She'll enjoy a C4.

Thanks Seasink, I'll do a bit of research on the turbo issue.

It's something important to check, but don't let it put you off the diesel. Here we are for the last one- Getting to know my new 07 C4 HDi - with your help please.

Didn't most of the C4s come in with the six speed clutch pedal less EGS box or can you get a real manual - maybe in the early 2 door ones with petrol engines?

They were sold as either a manual or EGS when new depending on what you wanted or could afford.

I would advocate staying away from a 1.6 diesel in this application. The 2.0 8V diesel is a more durable and simpler unit to keep.

2.0 HDI is a better proposition, but newer and rarer. Usually (always?) with an auto. There are none on Carsales at present.

My part-time neighbour has a 2003 (I think) RHR engine 307 with manual box. It does regular highway miles, Goulburn to Sydney and back three times or more a fortnight and commuter work inbetween. Been fairly good, save for a cruise issue, the early COMM unit fault and regular losses of keys by owner.
