    Default Xsara Problems

    Hey Guys,

As part of a test to monitor my fuel trim levels I ran my car at idle (~900rpm), 1500rpm and then 2500rpm (all in neutral, no load). I noticed that at 1500 and 2500 my car makes these quiet popping noises with each one accompanied by a dip in the rpm. At idle and when I'm actually driving it under load I don't notice anything. Anyone know what's causing this?

The car did throw a p0170 fuel trim malfunction and p0325 knock sensor codes which I cleared and they haven't returned yet after replacing the knock sensor and new sparks/fuel cleaner.

It sounds as though these is a miss when running at no load. Have you changed the spark plugs recently?

I did change them recently with the NGK BKR6EZ.

Strangely NGK do not have an exact match in their catalogue. They only have a match for the phase 1 Xsara (98-01) and with less power (98kW) but the exact same engine.

So which engine do you have? Is it a series one or two?

Ah the gti6 engine. I'm sure auto one has a listing for the right plugs for a 306 gti6 we just changed ours.

Hmm after alot of googling I'm getting a feeling the supercheap guy gave me the wrong ones. Whilst NGK don't list spark plugs for the 124kW model most eBay pages are selling the BKR5EZ for it which must be different enough to cause a misfire. I wonder if supercheap will take back incorrect used plugs

I presume you kept the old ones, can you compare them physically with the new?

The old have a single electrode and are of French origin. New are double electrode. Best thing I can do is buy the BKR5EZ and see what happens. According to NGK the 5 signifies a hotter plug than the 6.

    https://www.ngk.de/nc/en/product-fin...2/BKR5EZ/9188/

So NGK have 2 different spark plug recommendations depending on your xsara vts phase.

    Phase 1 - BKR6EK

    Phase 2 - BKR5EZ
