Icon7 THE D Super Sells at auction

Probably the best maintained DS I have ever seen and its owner have parted company.

Yes, Len Drew has finally sold his superb and multi-award winning D Super 5. I and some other AFers met Len at the DS 50th in 2005 and spoke with him while being careful not to drool on his super car.

He was also at ICCCR 2012 in Harrogate. The car was on display in the main hall there - having towed the caravan up from the south.

Story about the sale here. Note the well deserved price, and it's about 14k (UKP) over what he had been asking in the past for it.

Lovely car and all that but what do you do with it? Have you seen Darrin's DS or Jamie's from DSparts? Both rather rusty on the wings and seat covers my cat would be ashamed of but used day in and day out. I'll take my miserable head off now!

Well, £63,840 for more than 200 trophies and prizes comes to less than £320 for each trophy or prize

Len's car is the gold standard, and he is the definition of fastidious! He spent nearly a year of full time work taking his car apart and rebuilding it, giving attention to every single detail. He sprayed it himself outside in the winter with a heater, filled every spot weld on the floor and applied 24 coats of paint to it!

There's a very good article about the car in the Sept 1991 issue of Your Classic, a UK magazine from way back when, describing in some detail what he did to perfect it. I just dug it out to read again. Quite amazing that someone with that level of attention to detail took on a complex car like a D.

    Cheers

About another 23 coats of paint (applied in winter).

Not sure why folks say the D is complex?

Not so much that the car is much more complex than any other, its a matter of just how deep you want to go in the resto.
The measure of your character isn't what you do when people are watching- it's what you do when they aren't watching.

It's all relative. I remarked to a new Peugeot salesman that our Renault R8 at 30 years old was more reliable than tour fairly new 306 (when its heater radiator failed just out of warranty) and his comment was "there isn't anything TO go wrong on the R8". The R8 is now 50 years old, on its original heater radiator. The Peugeot is on its third at 20 years.

Compared with an FJ Holden, you'd have to concede that a DS does have a few more components and systems to think about.....

Here is one pic of Len and the car in 2005. Click the link for more pics of this amazingly well cared for car. Yes, he and his wife drove it there from the UK for the event. Obviously with some form of channel crossing...
