We know Citroen owners do it tough, but this seems a little harsh...

Well.... it's the name isn't it?

Cactus : dead, not functioning ("this bloody washing machine is cactus") from Australian slang dictionary

Much like the mythical reason the Chevy Nova didn't sell well in Mexico and South America: the name, broken into consonants spells out "doesn't go" in Spanish.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was reputedly to be called a Silver Mist until they checked the meaning of Mist in German.... The polite translation is "manure". Have to be thoughtful about these things. Subaru Legacy is in Australia Subaru Liberty - Legacy being a wonderful organisation that looked after families whose fathers/husbands were killed, among others, by Japanese in WWII.

No doubt there are more. I'd cringe if the Cactus were released here with that name.

I remember hearing that Rolls Royce nearly committed a major marketing blunder in the late 60's. Their new model was to be christened 'Silver Mist'. They had done bulk user group evaluations, printed all brochures, multi-language etc and that's where it came unstuck. 'Mist' in German I believe means 'manure or dung' or similar, often used as an expletive. I bet some heads rolled over that one.

You have to feel sorry for Citroen in Australia. They are about to launch the Cactus on the Aussie market. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

By all accounts it is a good car and selling well overseas. It is the one with the giant bubble wrap side panels.

It just goes to proof, you can't please everybody.

It'll work in PSA's favour if drivers of Cacti spend most of there driving time overtaking other vehicles, otherwise they're doomed!

CitroŽn Australia are aware of the potential backlash on the name but are embracing it with gusto in the hope aussies will see past it and value the car.

That's hilarious....maybe the car will benefit from a cult status over the name. Bit bizarre though.

Unless they have changed to another auto trans manufacturer the name may well stick!

But hang on, don't we think of a prickly pear when turn our minds to thoughts of cacti. They want to market a car that the average Aussie would associate with being rooted and/or a noxious weed. Good luck with that...
