Default ZF 4 speed "sealed for life" (XM)

    So...

How do you know your gearbox is about to explode.

Mine is getting hung up in gears and changing up or down erratically. Other than that, it seems to be working fine (the car goes)

You didn't put Dexron III in it did you ? If so the fluid has probably turned black and the valve block is starting to stick from the contaminated oil. The slugoamtic in my old XM was completelly and totally worn out, but still worked as designed at 250,000miles...... 'Cos it has never been contaminated with Dexron III.

I had the fluid changed at the Citroen place in Box Hill. I think I will take it to the ZF specialists in Dandenong to get a diagnosis.

Oh ignore me ... You must have a later XM without the 4hp18 .... Sounds like they did the right thing

    Maybe a 4HP20 ... It's a box with electronics right?

    Yeah Shane - 4HP20
Could just be sticky solenoids... I was just out in it and for the majority of the journey, it behaved itself.
