Bonnet badge is wrong, maybe it had a hit in the front. Clean engine bay though..

Yes earlier models had the bonnet badge offset.
Too bad you guys didn't get the earlier carb version, I've had 2 of them, and they go like hell

I had a local injected one, still went like hell!
That ebay car looked great, loved the colour and condition.
Lucky for me it had a sunroof so wasn't tempted to add to the already too big collection!

It's a 91, same as mine. Badge is definitely offset. Maybe this was a private import though the ad claims 1 of 30 brought in by Franzcar

Graham, I think you'll find the confusion re bonnet badges and other spec matters happens because the year model / sold date and the build date vary when it comes to Australian AX's compared with the rest of the world. What might have been normal for a 91 or 92 model in Europe or Japan or New Zealand doesn't apply for Australia. I doubt that Australian AX's came from more than one, certainly unlikely to be more than two, runs on the production line. Anyone out there with an Australian AX care to state what their ORGA shows about build dates to prove me either right or wrong? There may have been more than one shipment to Aus, but I know of 1991 AX 's that dealers were still trying to sell new in 93.
Like you, I'd state that the central bonnet badge marks a replacement of either the badge or the bonnet, for as far as I know all Australian AX's originally came with offset badges. I reckon my old AX wore a series 2 boot lid when I got it in 1995 because someone ordered the replacement based only on the year in the logbook rather than the VIN.

Gezza, did you buy it new / do you know if the bonnet was ever replaced? I'm quite happy to be proven incorrect about badge placement on Australian sold AX's if it's by people who know the history of their cars from new.

I get the feeling that some AX replacement parts supply might have been like GS grille supply in the 1990's - try to buy a new one and your Australian agent would probably sell you only the later model GSA grille. The part would fit, but it didn't look the same as the original. AX bonnets are lightweight and easily damaged, the cars were expensive in Aus, when AX's were younger insurance companies would have replaced bonnets without much question.

While this tag is going, how about we try to get some details here of Australian AX's people have had. Mine was:
9/91 compliance 3 door VF72ADD0000DD1431 in black. Current status unknown.
(The computerised dealer service documents always included the details 01/91 Sidchrome on them - I don't know what that signified.)

    Just spotted this thread....

Wow. Less than $4k. With the same sort of Ks as a 4 year old car. You'd have to think it'd be bags more fun than a 4 year old Tiida or Astra etc.
I bought a '74 Alfasud from this guy about 3 years ago. I spotted it on eBay by chance and thought I'd just ring for a chat since his number was there in the ad. He said he had 54 watchers and, although there had been no bids at that point, he was fairly confident that he'd get a fairly reasonable price by the time the auction finished at 4pm that day. He sounded like a pretty honest guy....so I asked him if he thought it would make the trip home to Qld and he seemed quite certain that it would. I put a bid on it but I only bid the opening figure, just to get things started for him since he sounded like a real nice fella. And wouldn't ya know it, I was the only bidder.
So I rang him at the end of the auction and asked him if he'd be able to meet me at the airport the next morning. He said yeah, no problem, so I threw my metric spanners and sockets, some screwdrivers, pliers (and anything else I thought might be handy)into my check-in luggage and threw some clothes into a carry-on bag and next morning he met me at the airport in Hobart as arranged.
To cut a long story short, the car went better the further I drove it, so I ended up coming home via Deniliquin, Cobar, Bourke, Walgett, Goondiwindi etc. The car never missed a beat. 6.24 L/100 from the little 1.2 boxer engine.
To anyone here on the mainland who ever finds himself thinking of buying from this guy, I say bid in confidence. I found him to be very honest and just an all-round nice fella. He has interesting cars for sale from time to time, but the cost of getting them back to the mainland must put people off. I just used it as an excuse for a road trip and I ended up having a fantastic time.

CarNut, the 1.2 boxer is in a GS, the AX has a 1360cc inline. Glad you hear you had a good trip home.

Do you want to add its VIN to this thread as a way of starting a Register of Aus AX's?

I think CarNut was referring to the 1.2 boxer in the original Sud - I don't think he was saying that he'd bought the AX.

Will be interesting to see if the purchaser of that little AX does turn up on here.

Yeah, sorry guys....I was talking about the 'Sud having the boxer 1.2. But that AX does look like it would have been a nice little buy. I mean $4k seems pretty reasonable for a car that age in that condition.
The guy who was selling it is called Norman Henry, if my memory serves me correctly. I think he was into vintage pushbikes, but seems to be well known among the Italian car scene down that way. I did a bit of wet-blasting for an orchestral conductor a little while ago, as he is restoring a Fiat Spider. He initially hails from Hobart and knows Norman too. We both agreed that Norman is a really nice bloke to deal with. I'm sure the buyer of the AX would agree, whoever he/she may be.

Woops, I should have read the paragraphing more closely.
Hopefully we may yet discover who has bought the AX.

Bruce, should we start up a separate thread for a register of AX cars in Aus?

I notice your VIN VF72ADD0000DD1431 when I check it on vindecoderz.com comes up with Model Unknown and Year 1998-2012.

My 91 AX VIN VF7ZADD00001331 (listed on the rego sticker) appears to have insufficient digits when performing an online search. However if I try putting an "M" in 10th place (and pad it with an extra zero) it identifies it as year 1991 and model AX. I don't know if that's what it should be, but I'd be curious to find out.

You can if you want to Graham
I was getting my VIN details from the RWC and Citroen service receipts I still have, so I can't say exactly what was stamped on the car.

I bought an AX GT 3-door white from the dealer in Balgowlah NSW in 1993. It was a demo car, about 800km on the odo. It has been in a prang, as there was the smash repairer's sticker in the driver's door jamb. I have lots of pics of this car, will dig up one and post re: the offset chevrons. Also if I have any evidence of its VIN I'll post that too.

These cars, supposedly 50 or so, were actually Japan-market AX GTs that were complied by a local engineering company. I spoke to the bloke involved at the time. Doors were taken off all cars to fit the intrusion barriers, and the Hella third brake light was an aftermarket local item. The glovebox lids were removed so that the cars could pass ADRs, but then the dealers has them in stock cheap if you wanted to buy one back (as I did!).

I have a black AXGT which I bought 2 years ago. It had been stored in a garage for 5 years and I neglected to clear the cooling system, so eventually a new head gasket was required. VF7ZADD0000DD1432 Citroen AX 1998-2012 - VinDecoderz.com is the best online VIN decoding tool

Here's another orga number for you..
1991 AX gti 2 owner car with 95,000 kms
1991 Melb Motor Show car...first AX gti to be sold in Aust to a Desmond Lee of Lansell rd,Toorak
sold back to Europrestige staff member Margaret..
Drove it home from Point Cook to Main Ridge on a stinking hot day in peak hr traffic
It was approaching the red but when the fans kicked in and given some open road it would come right down but given it hadn't really run in 5 years it's no surprise...

^ mmmm tidy.. They look better in white though.

How are the head gaskets on these any more fragile than other cars? Never heard that one before.
