Default D heater tap with thermostat

What is the thermostat doing in this tap?
    Open or closed when cold/hot?
    Whats it for?

This question has come up before, this answer made the most sense to me. . .

    "Déesse" Roland Barthes, 'Mythologies', 1957

The Déesse has all the characteristics of one of those objects fallen from another universe that fed the mania for novelty in the eighteenth century and a similar mania expressed by modern science fiction: the Déesse is first and foremost the new Nautilus.

I notice that on the D the thermostat is sampling the air temp after the heater and thus is controlling the air temp to the cabin. The coolant flow through the heater does not go to the radiator and thus slows down the engine warm up by the amount of heat transferred to the cabin.
