Default SM gearbox, Lotus Esprit Turbo question

I have a work colleague who asked today about how to find info about an SM gearbox. Strange I thought coming from a UK car fan. Anyway, her husband has a Lotus Esprit Turbo and would like to source info on the gearbox because it is the same as the SM 'box.

I found the link in the manuals thread and pointed her at the combined SM page etc etc.

Was it the correct assumption of her and her husband's re the gearbox or have they, and now I, been lead up the garden path?

Some ran a Renault transaxle and others a Citroen one. I think the Renault box came out with the more rounded update esprit.

Think the box is the same, but the differential is the mirror image. On the Merak the differential needs to rotate the other way as engine/gearbox layout is reversed (gearbox behind), else if you put an SM gearbox on the engine you'll get 5 reverse gears and one forward. Assume same applies for Lotus unless their engine rotation is the opposite way?
    Cheers, Marc.

The Merak and Lotus have the diff flipped.

All the original Esprits, the G models after the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, had the Maserati/SM box. From 1987 the rounder later model, the S after it's designer Peter Stephens, initially had the Maser/sm box in the normally aspirated models and the Renault box in the turbos. From about 1988 or 1989 they all had the Renault box.

Does your colleague's husband need a Lotus box? I have one complete with the inboard brakes etc. Or if it's the later S model turbo with the Renault box I have some of those too.

Are you sure they only flopped the diff Isn't that the DS gearbox. I thought all the shims and bearings didnt' like running backwards

That's why it's far from easy to re-power a DS .... you need to reverse the gearbox

    Hi

Lotus Esprit Giugiaro gearbox is the same as SM till 1983. It was know as "previous" Citroen. From 1983 to 1988 they used the so called " C 35 "casing. Some internals were also changed.
Bellhousing was specific for Lotus. Turbo and non Turbo.

The Maserati Merak has the same engine as the Citroen SM but in the rear and therefore they needed to convert the rotation of the gearbox. It was completely mirrored. Gearbox casing, bell housing, 5th gear carter and cover. Also internals were mirrored.

Lotus had the luck, their engine rotates in the correct way, opposite to the Maserati engine,so the SM gearbox was a plug and play unit.

See photo, left casing is Merak.

    Cheers,

Thanks all for this excellent information, and I don't think there could be any higher authority than Harry. I will forward the link of this post to the colleague.

If you look carefully the smear of violet paint is there.
