    Default XM revering light switch

Can any one tell me if the auto box on an XM (year 200 with ZF) has a seperate reverse light switch (and where it is located) or, Is it looked after by the ECU?

Didn't you say a while back, you'd acquired one of the pirated SEDRE sets? Should be in there.

I doubt Sedre will have XM, Xantia or earlier diagrams unless they've been included fairly recently. You needed to refer to the printed material.

Check connectors, earth (possibly common) and what should be fuse F19 under dash to begin with. Edge connectors at the rear lamps are also notoriously fickle. The diagram I have suggests supply is via the gearbox position switch and that may be a 9 way brown or 10 way black connector near the gearbox. If it's a 9 way brown, the circuit is through pins 8 and 9. I'm not sure about the 10 way connector.

Thanks David, that is very helpful. The lights (and reversing mirror) have only come on once in the 3 months I have had the car.....
I cannot read the wiring diagrams - all too complicated....

The Haines manual describes the reversing light switch for the manual transmission thus: "The reversing light circuit is controlled by a plunger-type switch that is screwed into the top of the transmission casing."

The workshop manual suggests that for the auto version, the reversing light switch and the switch for the dashboard gear display are also on the transmission itself.

I Know the part - it has a multiple pin conecter on it. I will take it out on the weekend, clean it and clean all of the electrical pins - see if I can save it. The dashboard gear display is not working so, this will be the problem.

Don't take the switch out unless you are certain it will go back in exactly the same spot. Mark the position. Focus on the connectors and earth points before the switch. The gear position indicator on the dash not working could be unrelated, perhaps due only to no backlighting.
