Sounds like your brake light switch down there on the brake lever has almost stopped working. You will find that your brakelights are also not working much of the time either. I think fitting a new switch should fix the problem. On mine I can hear the solenoid on the gearshift lock click the first time I put my foot on the brake. Either that or the solenoid has gone sticky but I have read that the brake light switch fails more often. Perhaps you could get someone to observe operation of the brake lights as you try to get it out of Park as that might help narrow down the problem.

    Cheers,

Switch in the brake pedal needs replacing. I had same issue on Xantia a few years ago.

Leave it in neutral when you stop until you get it fixed?

This is an X7 series C5. First image is from a 2001 model, so it's going to be a little different and I don't know if that part number for the detent pin is good for post 2007/8 models or not. The common problems with the earlier X7 cars are either the brake switch or the mini relay that operates the release. If the brake switch test mentioned above shows the lights come on every time, then suspect the relay, which is hidden nearby in the centre console. You may even be able to open it and clean the contacts. You can probably find the brake switch via eBay, but the relay may be a little harder. Matt in parts at Continentals will know these parts if you want a dealer contact.
