    Default CX trivial question

Does the centre consul ashtray have a light in it? I recall a nice green light Or was I imagining this from another car?

Which version are you asking about? Is it the slide out, on top of the radio version?

The early version with the vertical radio mount does it is a bulb and holder that slides into the plastic clip on the high edge of the ashtray aperture!

Mine has the same centre console. There is no light in the ashtray, but there should be a light surrounding the lighter.

    That there is and works.

However, damn Poltergeist in my electrics is determined to have something not working!

I replaced the control light above the ignition key hole happy with that achievement I have put every back together, which is not easy when all the plastic bits are so badly aligned and flimsy, and now the stereo has no power and the hand brake warning lamp is playing up again. Just as well i have many spare hours to chase the Poltergeist.

Poltergeist was hiding behind the stereo, everything is working again but not sure where it will turn up next.

Don't mess with the Poltergeist! Minor problem? Leave it! Significant problem? Move in gently, don't use bad language whatever you do.

Don't ignore it! I had a dash fire recently. The loom running back to the fan speed controller was jammed up against the gearbox housing surround (very sharp edges) luckily switched off fan & smoke stopped. Molten mess later; Pulling out centre console it was evident I was probably the first to remove it since the factory install. Luckily I had just purchased one of those cheap right angle screw driver Rachet sets from the bargain shops so didn't have to remove the drivers seat. (A handy investment if for nothing else)

Ouch. Perhaps I ought to stand corrected! It isn't uncommon to have something that doesn't work - what was the first symptom of serious trouble to come with hindsight?

Does that mean you found the ashtray light? There is definitely one fitted to your model.
I agree with your comments on the wiring and the centre console. The plastic embrittles with age, just to make things worse.

Just check you have power and earth .... it's probably lost the earth connection (it's mounted into plastic so won't pick it up through the housing).

They seem to illuminate better if you use LED's .... Though the LED's seem less reliable than the standard globes in my experiance.

Yes, a warning on the led - I am sure there are good quality leds on the market - be sure you get those. I changed all my dash lights to led some months back to a BAD batch apparently, and now it is all blinking and fading out like a really sloppy x-mas decoration. I will be sure to use the traditional bulbs next time round, better with less light than none.
    Cheers
