    Default CX chassis number location

    hi,

my adelaide based friend just bought a cx 2500 from melbourne
he took the car to the transport dept to get local registration
    THEY IMPOUNDED THE CAR!
because they could not find a stamped chassis number on the body
correct vin and engine numbers are pop riveted on, and the full history of the car is documented

can anyone say if/where the chassis number may be stamped?

    thanks in advance
    Ken

They impounded a 40 year old car that has a market value of maybe $500 .... Are they morons?? Do they really think anyone is going to bother re-birthing a valueless car. That's just ridiculous.

That's where mine is on the Xantia too. Funny letters as "dot imprint" patterns. I get home tonight and will have a close look at the CX.

They IMPOUNDED it??? You need to find someone in Adelaide who really knows the SA system I'd suggest. Try a well-established car club (maybe the dreaded Sporting Car Club of SA for example). Equally Simon might know. He'd better tread carefully as we can see where the power is at present. There are a few independent engineers in Adelaide accredited to pass modified cars for rego, so one of them might be able to help.

    Hi Ken,

Well, I've checked mine this morning. The number is engraved along a horizontal space about half way along the inside edge of the mudguard where it is spot welded to the body. I think the engraving is visible because of a gap in the horizontal edge part of the mudguard pressing. But you really can't miss it, at least on my 1980 CX.

    Wow. Impounded... Wow.

Best of luck. I'm chasing up a bloke I know in Adelaide who used to be authorised as an engineer to OK modified cars for the SA rego folk. Keep us informed please, so we stop if your friend sorts it out.

Impounded?????????? WTF??????? What is this country coming to????? The motor registry and transport departments in this country really do employ morons sometimes. It reminds me of the time I made enquiries to Queensland Transport with regard to putting a 3.5 Rover engine into a Triumph TR7. Reading from his script, the pen-pusher on the other end of the phone told me that the car would have to have the brakes and suspension upgraded to TR8 specs. Fair enough. But nobody at Queensland Transport could tell me what those specs were or where to find them. I knew, but I wanted to know if they knew, lol.
Fair enough that they wouldn't register the car without verifying chassis details, but to IMPOUND it????? I'm afraid I'd be looking for someone to take out the back for a bit of good old fashioned "counselling", lol.
Ken, I hope your friend gets a suitable resolution soon!!
    Cheers
    Steve

Yes, that is what can happen with non-VIN/non-chassis number cars, regardless of whether it is a Bugatti Veyron or a $500 OHOS. The rego people don't know whether it is stolen or whatever. As always do all due diligence before handing over the cash, check that all numbers exist and match documentation to save a world of pain down the track.

The car will likely have been seized for further investigation. So don't stop talking to the people involved, find out what the issues are, what is happening, and what you can do to help the situation. What may happen, if the car comes up without issue, is that an SA registration authority VIN label with an new issue VIN number will be attached to the car allowing it to be registered.

I've never had any problems with Regency Park, you just need to have everything ready to go before you go through. Even if it is just a vehicle identity check, make sure that everything works and is clean before you take the car for inspection, the car will be eyeballed as you drive through - and directed to a full inspection at a later date if they think it needs one. Make sure that you know where all the numbers are, and that they are clean, clear to read and correct and matching (all documentation is generally done before the actual inspection), and point out where the numbers are if the car is an oddball (before they tell you to leave the car and go behind the line adjacent to the waiting room).

The inspectors have a lot of cars to get through, so don't have time to stuff around with dirty or incoherent numbers or abusive people.
