They were dribbling out leftover gold Xsaras for ages, so check the build date vs compliance plate date if you are worried about any difference. At 10 years, it's not going to have any material affect on what you are buying.

Commenced production in 1997 I think. Facelifted in about 2000 and ran till replaced by the C4 in 2006ish.

We got the VTS in Australia with the 2001 facelift. There was another minor facelift mid 2004 which was sold until 2005 when the C4 was released.

Aussie never got the Ph1 Xsara? Shame - I much prefer the look of the earlier car:

    Especially in kit-car/WRC form!

What are Xsara's like? Any known problems etc? Would they make a good first car for a learner driver (1.6 VTR with ABS & airbags standard) and do they ride better than a C4 for example?

I had a 2002 model and loved it as did my 8 year old daughter at the time. So much so she is keen on getting one for her first car. Awesome value.
Only recurring issue was the window regulator. 2ltr was a little thirsty so a VTR might be the go for a P plater.
The vts has enough grunt for fun but not enough to get into trouble.

The last time I drove a Xsara, was back in 2006.

From memory, they are "softer" than a C4. If you had a choice between either car - I'd go the C4. Newer and safer!

My girls have learnt to drive in the C4, but now to bounce off the scenery? I did in a 505 and an '85 Ford Laser but survived years at the helm of of Fiat 124 BC Coupe & a Lancia HPE taking ridiculous risk; power is just as important as airbags

A bit softer than a GTI6, longer gears being a 5 speed, but that engine. Wow. So strong, so much fun. Velour seats aren't as nice and switch gear is a bit cheaper. However, a very competent, excellent car. Getting on a bit now. I expect panels are made of cheese like the Pug and dent, crease and chip easily.

Hey Linc those velour seats were awesome! By far they were the most comfortable of the Frenchies I have owned. I miss the rorty engine in the Xsara VTS, the 1.6 THP engines in the 207/208 deliver the goods but they sound naff.

Xsaras would be really cheap now, the VTR would be good learner car, easy to drive, pretty economical.
