    Default lower ball join play

    Hi Everyone,
spent two days trying to undo lower ball join nut holding the seating ,spacer and ball together. I made up 3314_t special tool and freed the press metal from the slots. So far no luck. It just does not move and keep shearing three pins from the tool. Maybe I'll try tomorrow with high tensile pins.
Q: Anyone knows what is allowable if any, horizontal ball joint play?
    Cheers

Ahem! I'm sure a few straight people might be interested in helping, too.

Are you holding the driving flange down tight with the centre bolt? I'd have thought that getting it "FT" there, might assist. Also try some shock with sharp blows from a lump hammer and drift, before fitting/tensioning up the tool.

The tool really needs to have high tensile pins. Have you cleared the metal from the slots that the pins engage .
Note dowel pin 14 in the diagram.

That pic was taken straight from the spare parts manual. It has been a long time since I performed this job on my old D Super 5 so my memory is getting a little bit rusty. I had to make my own extractors and remember that the unit sat over the ball pin stem and the nut was put back on to the ball pin to prevent the tool lifting off the surface of the ring nut under the spanner torque!
