    Default Broken CX

    Well,
I set the tappets on my CX and, when I stated it, it ran straight up to 4000 revs. Found the airhose that was not fully attached, fixed it, started the car only to find that, one of the bearing in the small end of one of the conrods was starved of oil and is now making a very loud tapping noise.

Are you sure it is a gudgeon pin? They are usually very robust. A big end would fail first!

I will drop the sump and give everything attached to the crankshaft a good shake - I hope you are right.

    thanks

You have to take the motor out to drop the sump. Have you done that yet?
The sump consists of two parts. Taking off the lower pan only gives very limited access to the internals!

Alas. Bad luck. Back to square one with diagnosis I reckon. Do you have any oil pressure on idle? Are you absolutely sure that a tappet didn't come loose? Really heavy, deep noise, deep in engine not at top? Oh dear.

    Best wishes.

Higher frequency noise coming from top but, when I use the screwdriver stethascope, the tapets sound fine. Definitely coming from number one cylinder. I will check the tapets again just to be sure. I have done a big end bearing once before and that sound was as you describe. Oil preasure and level are fine.

If you are sure that it is definitely No.1 you may be able to see by removing the bottom plate of the sump. It and No.2 are the only ones visible this way!

Me too, but luckily not in the CX! It's quite a heavy knock.

    Best of luck...

Found it!! A previous owner had removed and blocked off all the anti polution stuff. They had left one pipe with a 1 way valve on it (pointing directly at the firewall which explaines the fumes I was getting inside the car). They had glued it in place with some silicon stuff and it fell apart in two peices. I forgot about it but, after redoing the tappets I took it for a drive and the noise was still there. Put it up on ramps an found a small outlet on the exhuast header which was creating the noise. I just need to let it cool down and I can block it.

Great. So it was/is a clattering anti-pollution one way valve?

    Phew....
