    Default C3 transmissions

Could someone tell me what transmissions were fitted to C3 and the problems of each (daughter is looking to buy a C3).

AL4 auto, I like it but nobody else does
MA5 manual, simple and known weaknesses if not looked after
Semi-auto MA5, can exhibit sundry niggles

The auto does not suit a timid driver - it prefers decisive commands, whether STOP! or GO! Feather the brakes and you'll confuse it!

Edit: I have a special dislike of the 1.6 litre engine's ECU. Not the motor, it's computer.

The AL4 in the C3 is fine - probably due to the 1.4s dire lack of power. For running around town, they are fine but don't expect to be setting any top speed records in it...

My sister bought one. She likes it. Well specced and decent safety credentials at that price point!

Can we presume you mean an early model C3, not the current one that looks like a C4?

The AL4 box is perfectly OK in the C3. It needs the normal amount if maintenance an AL4 deserves but much less torque to deal with it should be reliable

The C3 is the perfect car for a young person. Great aircon, great stereo, and cute

I have had my 02 C3 with not a single issue and I actually really like the AL4 now. I have heard the latest C3 has some vast transmission improvements made to it.

Latest C3s have the joint BMW 1.6 motor and 4 speed AL4 auto, as does the new C4, or else a 3 pot 1.2 motor with the 5 speed BE manual box.

Syme Darby has odd views about manuals - they culled most from the model range. A shame because the 1.6 drives quite nicely with a manual transmission. The only criticism of the 5 speed 1.6 is that on better urban roads when the traffic starts to flow 4th is too low geared and 5th too high.

Have some problems with the C3 Auto gearbox. Thumped when changing up through some gears. Was so bad sometimes got stuck in second gear, had to pull over and restart motor. Hopefully fixed under warrenty.
