Default Thinking about buying a C6

    Hi everyone,

Over the next few weeks, I will be in the market for a new purchase and as the title suggests, I am interested in the C6. To me, they are the closest thing to buying a 21st Century DS.

I know that there are three on sale in car sales, but I wanted to know if anyone has owned one, or driven one extensively. If so, I would like to hear their thoughts and what to look out for. I have read the previous threads on the C6 re timing belts.

    Thanks very much.

Both the Editor and the Librarian at CCOCA have C6's and could possibly give you some info. Email them respectively.

We have a third C6 in CCOCA also but cannot give you contact details here. regards Hawk

I think of them as a luscious bodied longer wheelbase C5. Mechanically they are similar. Every time I see the C6 dashboard I wish it had gone into the C5 as well.

People not used to the very soft and floaty low speed suspension sometimes think the shock absorbers are worn out. There are only a handful of petrol V6 and later 3.0HDi cars here, so almost all of them on offer will be the 2.7HDi versions. The first batch or so of cars sold here had the TGV reclining rear seats and later imports had a folding back seat unless the buyer paid the extra $4K or so when ordering. The radio unit gained hard disk storage at the same time. Some colours are uncommon, notably blue and I don't think anyone would have spotted a red one here.

Among other usual items like wear and leaks, check radio/screen operation, front lower wishbone bushes, the eye bush at the bottom of the front suspension legs, gearbox slip on 2-3 upchange and look for signs of coolant leakage at the (brittle plastic) 2.7HDi thermostat housing in the engine valley.

Yes, mechanically similar to the C5 X7 range, but the variable suspension and general ambience are quite different.

I have been dreaming as well, I have driven one once and it reminded me of riding in a 50's ID, they are that soft, and look fantastic. Like any good Citroen they are a car you have to learn to drive properly, that is part of the charm.

The day we collected our C5 I sat in a C6 and decided that we had the better dashboard - and of course the fixed hub steering wheel.

Thank you Hawk for providing those details. It is much appreciated.

Thank you David S, Seasink, Greg C and UFO for your insights. This forum is amazing with the knowledge people have about any French car.

I remember seeing the C6 for the first time at the Melbourne Motor Show. Immediately, I thought this was a real Citroen, with fantastic looks. I have never driven one, and I aim to change that by the weekend. I am hoping they ride similarly to a DS, or my old GS.

Not to mention the better price tag.

It's quite surprising to see C6s down into the $30k bracket, not much more than a lot of new, everyday cars. Closest I've got to driving one is a very nice 407 Secondhand black top of the range Peugeot with the same 2.7l V6 diesel and gearbox in a test drive around Malvern and Armidale. This is going back a couple of years when these were in the $20k range but when secondhand C6s were rare and quite expensive.
