Default C5 water in diesel warning

2002 hdi auto has warning going on & off, but have just replaced the fuel filter element! Any ideas, faulty sensor? Or just Citroen perversity! Ideas please.

You won't know until you drain the filter housing. You may have taken a load of contaminated fuel - water does condense in the servo tanks. The filters are designed to trap water at the bottom, and should be drained periodically. The bleed screw is at the bottom. Drain it into a small jar so you can stop when pure fuel emerges. Re-prime with the rubber bulb after.

There is a water sensor in the housing.

PS Not quite your car (even less room), but the principle is shown at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70ql8VS9a68. If there's no water, then look at the sensor.

My 2007 had the same problem, bled the filter element for about 20 minutes, which is hard work using the hand pump, still the same error displayed on the screen. Had it towed the next morning, turned out to be a dead battery which played havoc with the electrics.... Maybe worth checking.

We have the same model and had the same problem, in our case the warning was bogus and I put up with it for around 6 months. During that time I regularly drained the filter into a glass jar to check for water and never detected a drop - solution was to change the sensor and all is good again.

If yo do drain the filter be very careful with the plastic drain plug, they become brittle and will break quite easily, had to fit a new part there too

    Cheers
