    Default Brake lights??

No brake lights at the moment (including the third set in the boot lid) is it likely to be the brake light switch connected to the brake pedal, or is it something more sinister?? Thanks in advance.Car is a 2002 xsara.

First check the fuse, then assume brake light switch.

Was the brake light switch, I was able to pull the switch apart file down the contacts, put a blob of solder on them file them flat and bingo! the lights now work.

Did you use the solder to fill in some pitting of the contact area left after you'd sanded it? You will want to find a new switch as the solder will not last as long as the original contact material.

In some switches, you'll see a hardened contact welded onto a less expensive metal strip. The idea of that is so the hardened contact resists erosion from sparking as the switch is turned on and off. A set of points is made this way. The contacts' surface finish and the grease used in the switch can affect the life of the switch too.

Speaking of the brake light switch - I have just received a new one from the UK, however not knowing these cars well would appreciate if someone can let me know exactly where this is on a C5 HDI and how easy it is to replace.

Hope this gets seen in this thread, if not I will post separately. Thanks for the help.
