Default Cant you just tell it's winter??

Well that was scary!!! I just went out to do a spot of shopping...(yes I know at 0500 in the morning, I hate shopping in the daytime) and I had to come back via a gentle slope in the road, (Bob and Buttercup are familiar with it) which had not been salted. What would normally have taken 90 seconds, has just taken nearly half an hour due to the snow, I had NO traction whatsoever!

Are those summer tyres, if so that's a deadly combination.

    Could be, I admit I haven't looked.
They are BF Goodrich, but that's all I know. If the roads are still bad when I go to work later, I'll leave the car at home and use my bus pass instead... that is assuming the buses are running!!

Smart move. I have spent time on studded winter tyres, even they don't give you that much traction, but the mad Fins were whizzing past me at 110kmh in a blizzard at night. Geez, they weren't even rally drivers.

I can't tolerate those hot temperatures... I wish I could!
the last time I was in Sydney, which was april 2006, it got to 35ļC, and I couldn't really cope with that...

    Two questions Smiffy:

    1. Why do you only like shopping at night; and
    2. What's open in Bristol at 5am?

Thanks for sharing these photos while most of us here in OZ are melting like a GS or CX steering wheel!

    1. I like shopping at night be cause there is hardly anyone in the store, no screaming kids, no old timers, no families....
    2. Almost all large supermarkets are open 24 hours, quite a few fast food places are too.
Many places in the city centre like bars, and kebab places are open till 4.am too.

In fact, Bristol is better than London for night time living...

I don't blame you at all. We don't get such luxuries in Queensland. It's difficult to get a decent meal anywhere after 9pm unless it's from the golden arches or the Colonel. I serve mothers with crying children and the frail elderly for a living and you just get used to their respective whining.

We can't afford to have shops open after 5pm in Brisbane because the minimum wages are about 5x what in Engerland

The thinking behind the 24hr opening, is with the very large stores, they have to be re-stocked during the night time, so the place has to have heating and lighting anyway, so you might aswell put some self service checkouts in there, and allow customers in to spend their money.
A few store workers are always nearby to help with restricted items like alcohol and tobacco, it works very well.

My son lives in Vechta, just up the road from Der Franzose. Shops open till 6pm, they close for lunch, and everything is closed on Sunday, except the ice cream parlour and a few cafes. They also have small tractors which sweep all the snow off the pavements by 6 in the morning. Winter tyres are obligatory. Sunday and 24 hour opening was the death knell for family life in the UK....

Depends how you look at it.
I can remember when everything was shut on sunday, in fact I can remember when even petrol stations shut at 10pm.

I can also remember how bored I used to feel...
