    Default A Traction question.

Was the gearbox of my 1951 Legere painted when it left the factory in Paris ?

Fairly sure that they were Allen. The Slough cars gearboxes were definitely Black. Bell housings were engine colour. Personally I would paint it ----- as I have done for my 1951 11BL that I am currently restoring.
I guess it is a matter of personal taste what you choose to do. If you go the natural metal look then I would at least use a clear lacquer to protect from oxidisation. The boys on the TA-L group of Yahoo may have a more definitive answer for you as they come into contact with predominantly Paris built cars.
BTW your rocker cover should be green but the black is another personal choice and who am I to say that you should paint it green? It certainly looks really nice!

    I agree, very nice.
Too nice in fact to risk getting it dirty.
Make up a nice wooden cradle and mount in your living room.

Gerry I have seen some old gearboxes that were green as per the engine . Perhaps they had been painted in the past when reconditioned . Can't say I have seen a black one, but you would know!
Out of interest what body colour will the 11BL be ?

David are you talking about Slough being green? I have never seen a green Slough box in original paint. Usually if the car has been unmolested there is some skeric of colour left on the box usually deep under the dirt that collects between the strengthening ribs. It has always been black! Of course after a rebuild people are prone to put on whatever suits their preferences.
