    Aaaaahhhhh. Yes.

I actually love the Ami and wish we had more in Oz TO appreciate. I know there's the odd one out there. There even was a good one for sale in WA a few years ago. I could sell the CX for an Ami.

    Hold on, steady.........

That Ami 6 John W referred to was for sale via CCOCA mag for what seemed like years. It ended up in Brisbane.

Just as well. I was sore tempted every time I saw it, but wan't prepared to cough up the asking price. Lucky it is out of temptations way. Hold on, Brisbane isn't far.... I'd better have another pill I think.

Seriously, the Ami is a very interesting and practical design and was, if I recall, the best selling car in France at one stage. They made the rear window angle work perfectly for rear seat headroom. Remember the half-hearted Fraud Angular shape? Give me an Ami.

Ami 6's big brother in action - Beechworth 1978. Affectionately known as "Brute".

AMI. A failed attempt to make a "better" looking 2CV. About as futile as placing a beautiful string of pearls around an ugly woman's neck when a noose would have been a simpler solution.

It was Flaminio Bertoni's favourite of his designs. If you look long enough you can see the balance and beauty in it. It was the best selling car in France during its life so obviously the normal people of France got it too. You're on your own then JBN.

The Ami 6 in particular is what the French call 'belle laide'. There's no English translation for that term, unless you count the Ford Anglia.

I think they're cute. Another product of Citroen at their creative peak!

My reading explains the rear window being a result of the design brief.. ie a 3 box sedan with a large boot..limited also by the 2CV chassis. The only way Bertoni could incorporate the large trunk and headroom in the back seat was by reversing the window angle.

Not so sure it was a failed attempt... given that they sold over 1 million of them and the production run was extended beyond it's original forecast. It would be interesting to understand the mindset of the period to truly appreciate the public's reaction to the design.. where's that Tardis Richo!

What amazes me is that the sculptor of the DS carved out the Ami as well.. a diverse talent no doubt.
