Come on now - someone out there must want a decent R25 that only needs a modicum of tinkering to turn back into a really great car!!

    Well Bogmaster,

You should do the decent thing and invest it in an 8 or 10!

Someone mentioned there may be an ex-rally R8 for sale in the canberra area?

There is a fake Gordini about the place. Not running, reinforced(including a double roof shell)
and instrumented for rallying (very nice faked up G dash and rally bits). It supposedly has 1.4litre Alpine pistons and sleeves....but isn't running and would need a fair whack of work.

The paint isn't that good and some of the removable panels would probably be better off replaced with something a bit straighter.

It could be a top vehicle at the right price..

The trouble is that I am now old enough to be terrified by the bloody things. Last time I travelled in Jim's G I ended up kissing the ground at the other end of the journey..and thanking Christ we hadn't been incinerated at 160kmh.

My view on the 25 is that buying any 25, particularly an auto and one that has been sitting about the place for a while, is taking a huge punt and averting to the probability of spending substantial sums on getting the thing right...and that's without factoring in paint. Hence the despicably low offer.

Some valid points.. an auto rebuild on an R25 is worth more than the value of the car in good condition.

I know Continentals in Sydney had a very clean, straight R25 auto for ages that they were struggling to get high two's for and it was an 84/85 model from memory that didn't need a cent spent on it.

In this case it seems the value of the parts as a breaker is far greater than the total value of the car as a project and that is not unusual for cars such as this.

You'd probably get $1k for the iinterior and drivetrain (excluding panels / doors etc) assuming the engine was ok and ran a decent compression.

The question that needs to be asked is what will it cost to get the car on the road, registered and reliable / presentable and what would one in that condtion be worth?

Working back from there usually determines a fair price.

Assuming a clean, straight, presentable R25 with 12 months rego would be worth no more than $3k then what would be a fair price all other things being equal???

Good luck with it either way...

Taking the bidder's hat off for a minute, I guess the things are worth what people are prepared to pay for them.

You are right, the car is probably worth more as parts, but that can be a shitfully slow business, especially when you are parting out something a bit unusual but not collectable.

Bogmaster I agree with you on that point. The R25 is a great car however, way ahead of its time in its day..

Well, I've generated some discussion if nothing else. Is there any interest if I bring the car to Sydney??? I consider that the car is really too good to scrap, but agree with the comments at the end of the thread. It's only worth what someone out there is willing to pay. So, is there any other interest?

I personally don't think you will make enough of a "premium" to warrant the extra cost and effort involved of bringing it to Sydney.

As someone said; you may get a $1000 for it by stripping it for parts, but it may take you 2 yrs to do it.

Sydney people log into Aussiefrogs too. If there was tremendous interest, you would have sold it by now.

There aren't too many specialist renault wreckers in Sydney anymore - I saw a repairable R25 at Payless Pick a part in Blacktown not so long back and you can bet they wouldn't have paid more than $250 for it - probably picked it up from the front of someones house for nothing to save them for parking fines.

There have also been some roadworthy cars for sale which didn't seem to sell too fast at low money.

I can add at this point that if you are handy at fixing stuff, the auto box can be partially rebuilt (ie new seal kit, bearings and friction plates - assumming stuff like electrics and solenoids are fine) for around $500 - 700 if youre game to do it yourself. Parts are all easily available from here or OS.

I love my R25, but am waiting for the auto to pop (230k km on it). I will be at least opening up the auto to see how worn it is when it goes, but with a manual parts car at home, it will most likely be converted.
I've said this before, but I will most likely get the pedals copied from my ULP cable clutch manual car, which means an R20 gearbox with Fuego bellhousing can be used for a conversion for someone else.

Car is on the market for $500 including spares. This is a good solid car that doesn't need that much work to get it back on the road. Is there any genuine interest out there at all???

How many miles did you say it's got on the clock?
    and is it still running?

    Hey,

My R25 has done 334,000kms, and I am only just having the manaul conversion done now. I bet you wouldn't get any where near that kind of mileage out of a Ford or Holden box!!!!
