You reckon this could tow a car trailor with a 205 on it?

Maybe not a car trailor... but definitely a car trailer.

My 504 wagon has towed other 504s (including a wagon) over quite long distances. No problem.

The 404 is a bit gutless, but still capable. With 2-litres it would be fine. Certainly it will be stable with those rear wheels right back as they are. A very good aspect of these cars.

How legal is it though? I thought the rules had changed with car type passenger vehicles, that the weight on the trailer was not allowed to exceed the weight of the towing vehicle. Perviously the rules were 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle.

The change in rules basically stopping all those ZH Fairlanes being used for towing service vehicles.

Fortunately the rules changed just after I finished needing to tow my 8 around behind my 12, as I'm sure the combined weight of the trailer and 8 would have been very lineball, if not possibly exceeding, the weight of the car.

8? 12? Not sure what these might be...

The rules do vary from state to state, but with the appropriate tow bar (these are marked with their load limits) you can in most states, IIRC, go to 1.4 times the weight of the towing vehicle.

hmmn not so simple really you have to consider the download on the towball, most are not rated above 120kg, that is supposed to be 10% of the weight of the trailer to ensure that it tows properly and dosent try to lift the back or front wheels of the tow car off the ground. Hence my bar on my Cruiser is rated at 3.5t but the towball weight restricts me to 1200kg. NSW are apparently very harsh on this. Also most states the combined weight of the trailer and its payload must not exceed the curb weight of the tow vehicle. Hence many 4wd's such as cruisers and patrols are now towing horse floats around.

A 404 wagon haven't seen one of them for a while, it would be a good car to do up, got that long stretched out body shape.Built like a brick dunny too almost like a little truck. drop in a v6 and 5 speed, irridescent purple spray job and mags you would have the slickest looking tow truck in town
