how much you reckon it would cost to get the motor fixed or is it beyond repair?

'rambo's right, of course, it's probably something very minor with the engine...

You blokes really ought to start doing your own work on your cars.

OTOH, there was someone after a car just like this the other day, wasn't there? Has an Mi16 engine ready to drop in...

It's at the mechanics now, not a belt...the engine's gone.

As for doing more work ourselves Ray, not sure where that comment came from.
I do what I can but until recently didnt have any room at all to work on cars living in the city.

Well, I have always done everything myself... no matter where I have lived. And the point I was making is that it saves you so much money it makes the difference between throwing a car away for much less than what it's worth and putting it back on the road worth more than it was the day before it all happened...

What 'rambo have tried unsuccessfully to do is find out something about what might be wrong with it... obviously it's not 'blown up' and it's most likely not just rings, they don't just 'go' like that... in fact, the only symptoms you mention seem to indicate electrical problems to me. Or the timing belt has skipped a tooth.

A lot of recent spending on the car, has to be worth the trouble of looking to see what needs doing...

Andreas you're selling the car ,maybe, what price do you want for the bloody thing? What is the right price?
I paid $2500 for what sounds like a better car 6 or 7 years ago also with a blown motor. Chucked the Mi16 motor in.

Ray, dont take this the wrong way, i'm not trying to be an arrogant prick like many casual posters here....

You've always done all of your own work...good for you, do you want a medal for that?

As I said, I havent been able to do much myself due to location.

You might bring up some valid points but you dont know the circumstances behind the sale.
Ray and pugrambo, thank you both for trying to help but the motor was expected to let go sooner or later due to damage caused recently.
It wasn't in the best condition to start with and would've needed a reco soon regardless.

Warwick, not asking $2,500 but definitely more than $1,000.
I'd imagine 6 years ago the demand wasn't as high, currently it seems a 205 mi16 is fashionable in Australia.

Dont know myself exactly at what price we'll settle, i'm the middle man and if i have it my way it wont be sold.

Not taking it the wrong way...

But there is never a situation where you can't work on a car if you have to. I once lived in a flat at the back of a house with no driveway, had to park in the street, and if there was work to be done it was done in the street.

I changed a gearbox (no easy task in a 203) under those circumstances.

You still avoid telling us what's wrong with this engine... I mean, you now say that the failure was 'expected' and that damage was done to it recently... though in your original post you said it 'ran well until recently, well maintained and always serviced'...

I'm a bit mystified by this. How about we 'share the knowledge'?
