Howdy Short Shifters,

We discussed Slick 50 a while ago. I've added another PTFE based lubricant to my gearbox oil, Nulon, which is half the price of Slick 50 (and made in Australia). I noticed the difference within 100 metres, in the form of easier shifting and slightly less noise. Definitely the best benefit is the slick shifting, though. Comes in 125ml tubes at most places that sell car stuff.

Try it between your fingers - sure is slippery. (Don't get any funny ideas though...) ;)

Yeah I've used Nulon in lots of customers cars and I haven't noticed any difference between Nulon or Slick 50, I think its personal choice, either is better than nothing but Nulon does have one thing going for it, It's Aussie made.

slick 50 and nulon are ok but a product called REDLINE is the dogs dangly bits. one would swear the gearbox has got brand new syncros. as smooth as a babies botty!!! very expensive tho but the best always is.
 
The people at the Prelude BB I frequented when I still had my Honda swore by Redline's manual transmission fluids (MTL and MTL 90).
www.redlineoil.com is the URL of the parent company, I can't remember who the Australian distributor was, though.
 
And how owuld I add these wonderous products to my gearbox?

yeah, that Nulon stuff is amazing, I tried some in my GS after the guy at the local Auto-parts store strongly recommended it. The change in the GS's gearbox was incredible, went from sounding like the transfer case on a 40year old Land cruiser to silent (in comparison) & the synchro's got a new lease of life.

Made the same difference to my 5spd CX, change is actualy respectable (for a CX). When I got the BX, cause gbox oil change & in with this crap right away. Difference?? Sweet FA. If the box is in good nick, your probably wasting your time, but if the box's were never good or worn the stuff is amazing.

hi guys,a lot of the gear add ins protect the future wear of any parts they come in contact with,so even if you dont notice any change dont think they are not doing any good.i think the main difference with slick is the metal is actually covered once the friction process works it in,the nulons tend to drain out again at the next change so you have to add more.slick protects for 80,000 kms a small price for that life.just my thoughts stuart.
 
Synchro Sliders,

I don't know if they're in the East, but Coventry's here in the West have the Redline products. As I've mentioned before, I use their lead substitute in my unleaded and the car has never run better. This is the same company that does that radiator additive (Water Wetter) that reduces temps. I've read a few tests of their products, particularly in European Car magazine (US based) and they get a great rap. It's an American specialist lubricant company - they do special diesel oils too, for those Pug drivers that might want to try them.

Charles, do you know that Slick 50 sticks and works for that period, or are you going on the company's promotional stuff? (Don't take offence - a genuine question - I wanna know!).

hi stuey.yeah i suppose like most of us we have to believe what we are told and read by these guys.i have used it in my cars and customers with good results,but the life is unknown as i havnt pulled apart a engine and had it tested myself.the promo book i have says lots of stuff about special test rigs built in usa at some millions of dollars to test thier claims and the sae have checked it independantly.the agent i buy my stock from says its the only product of its kind to be tested like this and is copyright so its unique.you can actually get the test papers from the sae or a slick rep to check it.well i suppose you gotta trust someone in life.like hebal health some work some dont,if your happy who gives a rats.see ya. stuart.
 
I gotsome of that Nulon additive today, however Im not too surewhere it goes :confused: My car is a 1995 S15 5 Speed Manual. Is it through this bolt inthe photo?

Hi,

has anyone tried the motorup/gearup stuff, it retails for about $80 NZ over here. Supposed to do wonderful things- anyone tried it?

I dropped in to my local pug mechanic this arvo and he answered my question. The filler is located at the rear of the gear box, at about the same level as the driveshaft and is a 19mm bolt...now, where did I put the hoist.... :confused:
 
for nick w, redline can be bought on the southside of bris..coventry spare parts. i think theyre around springwood somewhere as i always see their vans running around my work. u may need a credit card..its expensive. cheers
 
Phasis, hope I get to you in time, but unless your 'box has lost some oil you'll probably have to drop at least the 125ml you're going to replace, otherwise it'll just come straight back out the filler hole (I assume yours has the hole in the side of the 'box, and you just fill it until it comes back out..kinda self levelling..)

As for the expense, JR - probably worth it - Redline engine oils are supposed to be good for 50,000k so imagine the gearbox oil life! Prob. never need to change it again.

hey phasis, what sort of camera do you use for the gearbox shots,nice and clear,its just i am thinking of buying one and theres heaps on the market,not sure i want to spend thousands. :)
 
That is a SOny Cybershot. It's works. Not sure of the model but its 2.1m pixel with the big multi lens on the swivel connection to the left and the LCD at the back. A few years old now but was $2500 then. Thats only on 1024x768 standard...it can do 1600x1200 fine, makes the pics about 500k though.

I think sony make excellent cameras, however their propietry Memory Stick is expensive. over $200 for 64mb.

I also took all the pictures in the Trips section ofthisforum and the sounds from inside my car "Sound recordings of my S16" with it. It takes 15sec movies too.
